Symmetrical face

But one eye is bigger than the other

I hate to break this to you but I am going to show you that our faces are not symmetrical!

The normal picture

The normal picture

Countless times I hear parents reject a fantastic portrait because they see one eye is bigger or smaller than the other, well here it is, we all have eyes of differing sizes.

How he would see himself in the mirror

How he would see himself in the mirror

Many years ago this was demonstrated to me in the darkroom where I learnt black & white printing.

If you take one half of a portrait of yourself , then flip that half and join it to the other half you have, in effect, a symmetrical version of yourself with same sized eyes, do you think you would recognise yourself?

There will be some resemblance but it will look very weird indeed.

I have taken one of our young subjects and put it to the test, what do you think?

The same picture but with two right sides of his face.

The same picture but with two right sides of his face.

And now with two left sides of his face.

And now with two left sides of his face.

Celebrate the differences…! Amazing how something like this can make you look so very different.

So please don’t worry, we all have different sized eyes and thankfully non-symmetrical faces, I just hope that that future Android robot designers take this into account ;-)
